Donald is a crofter who lives next to a mountain called Ben Breac. He grows cabbages in his garden, but when winter comes he can’t keep the starving deer away from them. This is because the deer have a friend, the Old Woman of Ben Breac, who looks after them. She has magical powers, like leaping up mountains and making lightning from her fingers. Helping the deer get over Donald’s fences and away from his fierce dog is easy for her!! Truce is declared in spring, until next winter
